Longer Life For Your Laptop Battery!

When you're working on your laptop, it looks for information in your RAM. If your computer doesn't find what it is looking for in RAM, it has to access your hard drive. Unfortunately, your hard drive is not only slower than RAM, it uses approximately 30 times more power than 64MB SDRAM.

The more RAM you have, the less often you'll need to access your hard drive. The less often you access your hard drive, the longer your battery will last.

Adding RAM can make your battery last as much as 30% longer!

Q: Is it better to buy a 128MB module or two 64MB modules?

A: There is no performance difference between one 128 module and two 64MB modules. However, when you upgrade your memory, you should take into consideration the number of slots you have, whether you plan to upgrade again in the future, and the current prices for memory modules.

Right now, many of Crucial's 128MB modules cost less than two comparable 64MB modules. In fact, because of the current low prices on 128MB modules, many Crucial customers who planned on purchasing 64MB modules are buying 128MB modules instead.

Also, if you're running out of memory slots on your motherboard, buying the higher density module can save slots in case you want to add more memory later.

Unless you have money to burn or absolutely must have the fastest computer available, a memory upgrade is often a better choice than a processor upgrade. Upgrading your RAM is easier, less expensive, and it may improve your PC's performance more than a processor upgrade. In fact, the Council on Computing Power found that a RAM upgrade can save up to $541 over a processor upgrade while providing a more dramatic impact on your system's performance.

Should I get more memory for my PC?

A recent study by the high-tech testing experts at ZDTag shows a 64MB upgrade can dramatically increase the performce of your PC. Overall, significant Windows 98 performance gains were measured when machines were upgraded to 96MB of RAM. On average the systems that were tested experienced a 42% increase in performance when moving from 32MB of RAM to 96MB of RAM. Test results suggest that when purchasing any PC with Windows 98 installed at least 96MB of RAM should be specified to provide optimum performance.

How Much Memory Do I Need?

The type of software applications you’re using has a direct correlation to how much memory you need on your system to run them effectively. If you are a computer professional running word processing, e-mail, photo editing, font packages, multimedia software, CAD software, etc. you really need between 96 to 256 Mb of RAM for best operation. If you're doing desktop video editing, the more RAM you have, the better. To speed things up, you'll probably want at least 128MB of RAM, and Crucial recommends 256MB or more, which can give a performance upgrade of over 100% !
